Software Protects Privacy of Medical Records
Ensures Privacy during electronic transfers through the Internet or modems

November 10, 1999

Monroe, Mich. - Responding to a recent Clinton administration proposal for Federal standards to protect privacy of Americans' personal health records, Hilgraeve Inc. today pointed to its DropChute software as an easy way for health care providers to securely exchange private medical information electronically. DropChute instant file delivery software allows doctors, hospitals, health plans and health care clearinghouses to transfer patient records and billing information through the Internet without risk of eavesdropping, misrouting, or interception.

Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala's recently proposed regulations for ensuring privacy of personal medical records-and penalties for noncompliance-slated to go into effect February 21, 2000. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) called for such regulatory measures if Congress failed to pass legislation on this issue by August 21, 1999. The new regulations are sure to get the attention of those in the medical industry that have not implemented appropriate security measures.

"The HIPAA mandated federal regulations will make a substantial impact on the secure management of health information," said Ann Geyer, a partner in Tunitas Group, a well-known consulting firm for information technology in health care applications. "The DropChute family of products provides a mechanism to protect against new threats to patient confidentiality when communications involving medical records is conducted over the public Internet."

Geyer added that DropChute's built-in security mechanisms-encryption, user authentication and event logging-assist healthcare organizations in satisfying HIPAA electronic exchange requirements. DropChute also supports requirements of the HCFA (Health Care Financing Administration) Internet Use Policy, which applies to federal health insurance programs and Medicare, and therefore affects most health care organizations.

The DropChute family of software, including DropChute Enterprise and DropChute Pro, provides secure, real-time PC-to-PC connections via the Internet, intranets, or direct modem-to-modem calls. The products provide the level of security needed by the medical industry to protect personal medical information during electronic exchange. Commonly used Internet data transfer methods such as email, ftp, and Web pages generally lack the necessary security. DropChute's built-in security measures and simple user interface provide the ease of use necessary for broad acceptance among medical personnel.

DropChute Enterprise offers large health plans and clearinghouses the automation needed to exchange data with large numbers of providers and medical billing companies. Deliveries can be scheduled to occur automatically at predetermined times with no user-intervention. DropChute Enterprise interfaces easily with other applications to automate delivery processes-distribution or collection-of application data or reports. For individual health care providers not requiring such automation, DropChute Pro offers the same security measures (RSA Public Key Authentication and Symmetric Key Encryption).

DropChute instant file delivery software provides the easiest, fastest, and most secure way to send files through the Internet, intranets or modems. Byte Magazine promptly awarded DropChute a coveted Best of Comdex when Hilgraeve unveiled the software in June 1997. The company's popular HyperACCESS product line has won top awards from every major PC publication in comparisons against products such as Procomm Plus. Microsoft and IBM both include entry-level communications software made by Hilgraeve with their operating systems: IBM includes HyperACCESS Lite with OS/2 Warp, and Microsoft includes HyperTerminal with Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0.
